Customer Reviews

Not the taste I was looking for! :(I ran across this item while browsing for something else. I like to have pickled ginger with my tossed salad, so I thought I'd give it a try.The pros:+ Reasonable price, which included the shipping when I made the purchase.+ Fast shipping & it comes very well packed. The cons:- My first impression was that the slices were too thick & way too large... real big pieces that need to be cut or you'd get more than a mouth full!- The taste at first is pleasant, but then it gets hot... not real bad, but the odd aftertaste was a turnoff!I'm sure some will like the taste, but I was happy when the last bottle was empty! :(2Good enoughFirst, let me say that this ginger is from China, and any food from China concerns me.I have eaten about 30 bottles of this ginger. It is different from the pickled ginger (gari) that you will get in most restaurants. It seems to have been pickled for a shorter time, and it is definitely crunchier than restaurant ginger. Also, it is hotter and less sweet, and the slices are thicker. Nonetheless, when I eat it with sushi, I like the hotter taste because it is more flavorful (ginger is naturally hot). When I first tried bottled gari 20 years ago, it was absolutely horrible, so I know how much worse this ginger could be. A lot of people don't know that gari is not supposed to be eaten with sushi; it is supposed to be eaten between courses of a meal to cleanse the palate. But I prefer to eat my ginger with sushi, and the more intense flavor suits me. However, if I were eating it between courses, I would want a milder, sweeter ginger. The first bottles of Roland ginger that I ate were from a discount store, and they were a little old. They had a slight off-flavor. By the time I ate the last bottle (a year after I got them), the inner plastic seal disintegrated as I removed it, so you can't let this ginger sit around indefinitely. Indeed, I think that the vinegar probably caused the plastic seal to degrade faster than it would have. The fresher bottles that I got from Amazon have a fresher flavor, and it is definitely good enough to eat with sushi. Unless you are prepared to make your own gari, I recommend it (although I haven't tried any other brands).Another reviewer complained about the thicker slices. Restaurant ginger is sliced very thin and is limp, this ginger is sliced thicker and is firm and crunchy. The thicker slices may be one of the reasons it is hotter, since the vinegar may not penetrate the thicker slices as well. I had no objection to the thicker slices until I opened a bottle and found slices up to 2mm thick -- that's definitely too thick. But for the most part, I don't mind the thicker, stiffer, crunchier, hotter qualities of this ginger. This ginger is a little closer to being raw than restaurant ginger is, but it's good enough to eat with sushi. The vinegar leaked out of one of the bottles during my second shipment from Amazon, and the vinegar soaked the cardboard box. I didn't have rice vinegar, so I replaced the vinegar with water, and the ginger tasted okay. When I got my third shipment (on Oct. 21st), I found that the bottles were sealed in a plastic bag. None of them leaked; but if they had, the plastic bag should have caught the liquid. I have now received 40 bottles from Amazon, and only one leaked.3Quick and Easy Cucumber Salad using Roland Sushi GingerMy local stores don't have pickled ginger so I either make it myself (who has the time?) or I have to purchase Ginger through Amazon and I find Roland Sushi Ginger has the best price and the best packaging for my needs. And their ginger has just the right spicy heat for me.For less spicy heat, drain well or for even less spicy than that, rinse or soak in cold water before adding to salads or dishes. My favorite is to use a mandolin to thinly slice a half cucumber and toss with the ginger to make a two ingredient "Asian style cucumber salad" sprinkle with (toasted) sesame for that extra Asian flavor. For me a 1/2 cucumber and a half jar of Roland Sushi Ginger makes a meal for one. One jar with a whole cucumber split 4 ways makes for great side dishes. If you are serving Japanese sushi/sashimi as a main meal, you could use two jars in the salad and not use the small ginger side dishes (less dishes on the table and to wash).Another dish I like is rinsed ginger with pineapple chunks as a dessert or sweet snack. Ginger is good for you! Eat it anyway you like! Candied Ginger is the bane of my hips! LOL ENJOY!4Just what I was looking for - also a strange cure for nausea???I LOVE this stuff -- whenever we have sushi I can never get enough of it. Now that I have my own jars of it in the house I actually put it out as a kind of condiment with just about everything. A little secret? I had to take an anti-biotic last week and it made me soooo sick to my stomach. Guess what? Several forkfuls of this sushi ginger and the nausea was gone! Gone! Gone! Wish I knew about it when I was pregnant!4It's tasty, but check your packagingThe taste and heat are great. I actually use it for adding to smoothies more than for sushi. I like it better than crystallized because it has zero calories. The problem is that when it arrived, there were some droplets inside the packaging used to wrap the eight bottles. Upon checking, three of the bottles seals were leaking. I checked them by giving the bottle a light squeeze and listening for escaping air. To the seller's credit, they sent another eight bottles free of charge. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!4Something's OffI liked the very low price, compared to others I've seen. And I liked the small jars, which makes it convenient to store these for the long run.And yet, there is something about the taste that disappoints. Maybe I'm used to a different kind of pickled ginger, but Roland's ginger seemed sharper and somewhat metallic in comparison.2Flexible Use and YummmmmyI eat this stuff like candy. It's not too spicy/hot and it tastes so good. I eat it with my Chinese take-out and have made my own Chinese Noodle Salad by buying a McDonald''s salad and adding Angel Hair noodles mixed in Sesame Ginger dressing and I add chopped toasted almonds. Yummmmm! I get about 6-jars of these at a time and go through them in as many months. They last forever unopened and forever when opened and refrigerated. You can add fruit and/or protein to your 'salad' too, i.e. Mandarin Oranges, Grapes, pineapple, chicken, shrimp, beef or other nuts like peanuts or pecans. And, SAVE the juice! It makes a great homemade Asian Ginger dressing when combined with soy sauce, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar and maybe a pinch of sugar, chopped garlic and chopped pickled ginger. Yummmy and easy.5my fave condimentI used to spoon big gobbets of this stuff onto my plastic plate at salad bars, here in New York city, and was thrilled to find it was available as part of Amazon's Subscribe and Save program. By signing up for delivery at a specified interval, I saved 15% off the price, with every shipment coming free of shipping charges. My elderly father, who favors rather sweet mango chutneys, was similarly enthralled, and we may have to invoke one of Amazon's Subscribe and Save options. You can order an additional shipment, or cancel a given shipment, at any time.Great stuff, hard to find, sold in bulk, delivered free - that's Amazon.5Spicy Spicy SpicyThese are not your typical sushi ginger but do have a great taste. If you like your ginger spicy and powerful then this is an item for you. Additionally the slices are thicker than the ones you get in a sushi restaurant so the texture is different. I love these on sandwiches or just to eat from the jar. The artificial preservatives do concern me somewhat but overall I would most likely purchase these again for an occasional use.4Hotter than you will find at a sushi placeAlthough this brand of ginger is hotter than what you'll find elsewhere, I like it. Sometimes picked ginger can taste like soap. This brand's heat factor prevents that from happening. Even after having a jar open for a month, the heat of the ginger has not gone down much. This has a nice pickling of salt, sugar and rice vinegar. I like the taste. If you like things a little spicy, this would be the ginger for you. If you prefer mild ginger, look to the other brands.4
